Grumpysarn's Brain Teasers: Volume 1

Updated: Aug 19, 2020

Welcome to the first in what I hope will be a series of Godtear brain teasers. Godtear has been compared to chess on several occasions because positioning is so important and strategy is so deep relative to the complexity of the core rules. I am not a real chess person, but I know that real chess people like to look at chess problems - board states set up to give the player in interesting puzzle. This is my attempt to do something similar with Godtear.

The situation: You are playing the knowledge scenario. It is turn 3. You won turn 2. You are going second. There are three activations left in the clash phase. You have the Golden Shrikes and Halftusk to go, your opponent has Finvarr to go. All ultimates have been used. Halftusk is at full health. The Hexling is on your team. There are no boons or blights in play. Your opponent has maxed out on the Battle Ladder (yikes)!

Here is the board state:

What is the best path to victory? It's a tight spot, but there is a way out.

ANSWER:

Go first with the Golden Shrikes. Move them adjacent to the Shadow Sentinels. Give half tusk the speed boon. At the end of the Shrikes' activation, move the Shadow Sentinels together so that there is now a two-stack of them adjacent to Halftusk.

The opponent then gets to go with Finvarr. All Finvarr can do is Void Weapon and smack your troll. Hope he survives.

Assuming Halftusk is alive, he can now punch both sentinels. Hopefully, he KOs them both. He can then squish Finvarr's banner with the final action of the turn thanks to the speed boon. That's just enough to put you over the top. It's not a likely result, but it is your best hope to win the turn.
